Operations Research Case Studies

Full course description

Operations Research (OR) is concerned with the best way to assign scarce resource to competing activities. OR is widely used in industry to support economically efficient decision-making, but also other application areas where discrete optimization has a central role. It is for this reason an important branch of mathematics. In this course the student will be introduced to a number of themes both from within deterministic OR and stochastic OR. Themes within deterministic OR include the network simplex method, integer linear programming, non-linear programming and approximation algorithms. Stochastic themes include queuing systems, Markov chains and Markov decision problems. After completing this course the student will have obtained an overview of available models and techniques in the field of OR and their mathematical foundations. The student will be able to formulate and solve a mathematical model for real-life OR problems.
